Ants

If you discover ants trailing through your home over its floors and counters, know that you are not alone. Ants are a pest problem plaguing homeowners in Las Vegas and across the country. These tiny insects live together in large colonies and are programmed to survive. The worker ants move around daily to locate food to bring back to the nest, often finding reliable food sources in our yards and homes.

Many ants call the United States home; in our area, some of the most common are odorous house ants, pavement ants, pharaoh ants, and red ants. While ants are generally considered nuisance pests, keeping them from taking over our properties is essential. Ants spread bacteria and contaminate food. Depending on the species, some bite and sting, some cause structural damage, some produce foul odors, and others spread dangerous pathogens.

To help you avoid an ant infestation, we want to offer the following prevention tips:

  • In addition to food, moisture attracts ants; repair leaky fixtures, hoses, and pipes.
  • Keep lids on trash cans and recycling bins.
  • If possible, don't feed pets outside.
  • Inspect your home and use caulk or another appropriate material to seal openings you discover.
  • Maintain a clean kitchen and store your food in the fridge or in airtight containers to keep out of the reach of foraging ants.

Don't try to tackle an ant infestation on your own. Call Kiwi Pest Control for help guarding your home against ants!

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small, apple seed-like insects whose sole source of nutrition comes from the blood of warm-blooded animals. They are ectoparasites, meaning they feed outside their host's body. Bed bugs only make contact with their hosts to feed. They do not live on their host's body. When not eating, bed bugs hide out in dark cracks and crevices that place them near their hosts. Common bed bug hiding places in our homes are the seams of mattresses, cracks in wooden furniture, behind cushions of upholstered furniture, and inside electrical outlets.

Bed bugs are difficult to keep out of our homes because we are the ones that introduce them. These insects have adapted to living indoors in places like houses, apartment buildings, hotels, airports, schools, and laundromats. They move from place to place by crawling onto people, into our belongings, or are transported on secondhand items like furniture. Once inside a home, their small size and ability to hide can allow their presence to go unnoticed. Bed bugs quickly build large populations that take over multiple areas in houses or other structures.

While bed bugs aren't currently known to spread diseases, sharing a home and meal for these biting pests shouldn't be encouraged.

To help you avoid a problem with bed bugs in your house, we want to offer the following prevention tips:

  • Always inspect secondhand items for bed bugs before bringing them into your home.
  • Regularly wash your family's bedding and inspect mattresses for signs of bed bugs.
  • When traveling, always inspect your hotel room for bed bugs before bringing your belongings inside.
  • When at work, school, or in any public place, keep your personal belongings up off the ground and away from other people's things.

When it comes to controlling bed bugs, the best tip we can provide is to partner with a professional. At Kiwi Pest Control, we can provide you with high-quality bed bug inspection, treatment, and control services.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are persistent, pesky pests that like to make themselves at home with people. They are scavengers, so their life's mission is to locate reliable food sources to keep their bellies full. Unfortunately for Las Vegas property owners, the crumbs found under appliances, in pantries, around trash cans, and under toaster ovens make these pests think they are welcome.

The German cockroach is the most common roach species in homes and businesses. They are small, fast-moving cockroaches that travel from location to location in things like boxes, secondhand furniture, appliances, and electronics. In our homes, these pests gravitate to warm, humid areas near food sources like kitchens, bathrooms, utility closets, and spaces behind large appliances.

Cockroaches should never feel welcome in your home. To help you avoid a problem with cockroaches, we want to offer the following prevention tips:

  • Never leave out leftover food in the kitchen or outdoor eating areas.
  • Regularly wash dishes and take out the trash.
  • Place all trash bags in containers with locking lids.
  • Use dehumidifiers and make sure bathrooms and kitchens are correctly ventilated.
  • Inspect boxes and secondhand items for cockroaches before bringing them into your home.

Pigeons

Pigeons are pest birds. These aren't the cute little songbirds you like to see fluttering around your property. Pigeons are likened to rodents because they take advantage of people, our properties, and the food and shelter we provide to them. Adult pigeons have light gray bodies. Their head, shoulders, and breast are darker gray than the body. There are two dark bars across their wings and tail, and some have metallic feathers on the break, neck, or head.

Pigeons are a problem for people in rural areas but are especially problematic in urban areas like Las Vegas. Cities provide them with many different food and shelter options. In desert areas like Las Vegas, our properties also offer water sources from leaky hoses, birdbaths, pools. Pigeons primarily eat seeds and grains but also feed on garbage, insects, and whatever people throw at them from park benches. Our commercial and residential properties provide these pests with what they need, and pigeons won't hesitate to take advantage.

Preventing problems with pigeons is essential as they are destructive disease-spreading pests.

To help you avoid a problem with pigeons, we want to offer the following prevention tips:

  • Remove bird feeders from your property.
  • Keep locking lids on trash cans and compost bins.
  • Regularly harvest garden areas.
  • Repair leaky pipes, hoses, and air conditioners.

Rodents

Mice and rats are rodents, and both are regular visitors to Las Vegas homes and businesses. The good news is that if these rodents are in your structure, it will be one or the other; mice and rats rarely infest the same place. The reason these critters are such familiar visitors to our Las Vegas properties is that they offer them food, water, and shelter.

Being prey animals, both mice and rats do their best to stay out of high traffic areas. Unlike ants that like to trail across our home's surfaces in plain sight, you aren't as likely to see a mouse or rat out and about. Their preferred nesting spots include crawl spaces, wall voids, attic space, and spaces behind large appliances and cabinets. If you see mice or rats (both primarily nocturnal) out and about during the day, it indicates that you are dealing with a large infestation and require immediate help!

At the first indication that rodents have found their way to your Las Vegas property, reach out for professional help.

To help you avoid a problem with rodents, we want to offer the following prevention tips:

  • Fill openings in your home's exterior using wire mesh, caulk, or steel wool.
  • Repair roof damage.
  • Maintain gardens, keep outdoor eating areas free of food debris, and remove bird feeders.
  • Keep lids on trash cans.
  • Remove clutter from your yard and home that rodents can hide within.

Scorpions & Spiders

Spiders and scorpions, while two different pests, have a lot in common. First, they are both types of arachnids. Second, they are predators that feed on various insects and other small pests. Lastly, they regularly find their way into our Las Vegas yards and sometimes into our homes. These unwanted guests have a creepy appearance and deliver unwanted bites (spiders) and painful stings (scorpions).

The two most likely things that attract spiders and scorpions to a property are food and water. Our yards often provide these pests with a reliable water source through things like leaky pipes, dripping air conditioners, and poor drainage.

Any property with a lot of insect activity will attract these predators, and if insects have decided to move indoors, spiders and arachnids will follow. Torn screens, gaps under doors, spaces around utilities entering your home, open vents, and cracks in the foundation are common entry points for all your home's unwanted houseguests!

Nobody wants to share their indoor or outdoor spaces with large numbers of spiders and arachnids.

To help you avoid a problem with either of these pests, we want to offer the following prevention tips:

  • Clear the debris from your yard like leaf and brush piles that provide harborage spots for spiders and arachnids.
  • Remove areas of standing water from your property that will attract the insects that these arachnids like to prey upon and provide a water source.
  • Cut back shrubbery and other landscaping from your home's exterior walls.
  • Seal and openings in your home's exterior that could provide entry points for spiders, arachnids, and the insects they are following into your house.
