Scorpions are arachnids and related to spiders, ticks, and mites. They have eight legs and two large claws or pincers used for capturing prey. As predators, they feed on crickets, lizards, roaches, and other small insects. 

Scorpions are nocturnal creatures who spend the day hiding in dark places like cracks in walls or crevices in rocks; at night they come out to hunt for food. Unfortunately for homeowners, these predators will often venture indoors looking for food or shelter from extreme temperatures outside.

While not all scorpion species invade homes regularly, it is important to be aware of their presence if you live in an area with a warm climate like Nevada's desert regions where certain types of scorpions can become a nuisance pest when found inside dwellings. 

What are the Signs of a Scorpion Infestation?

Signs of a scorpion infestation can vary depending on the species and the severity of the infestation, but here are some common indicators to look out for:

• Sightings: Seeing live scorpions inside your home or property is a clear indication of an infestation. They are nocturnal creatures, so you might spot them more frequently at night.
• Shed Exoskeletons: Scorpions molt as they grow, leaving behind their exoskeletons. Finding these shed exoskeletons in dark, sheltered areas like closets, basements, or under furniture can suggest their presence.
• Scorpion Droppings: Scorpions leave behind distinctive dark, pellet-like droppings. These droppings are often found near their hiding places or along their travel routes.
• Dead Insects: Scorpions are predatory and feed on insects. If you notice an increase in dead insects around your property, it could be a sign that scorpions are preying on them.
• Nesting Sites: Scorpions prefer dark, secluded areas to hide during the day. Check spaces such as closets, attics, crawl spaces, and under furniture for signs of nests or hiding spots.
• Scratching Noises: In some cases, you may hear scratching or rustling noises coming from walls, ceilings, or other hidden areas where scorpions might be hiding.
• Stings: While not a direct sign of an infestation, multiple scorpion stings occurring in a short period could indicate a high population of scorpions nearby.
